Getting from Narita Airport to Your School or Housing: Train, Bus, Taxi, Luggage Delivery and Late-Night Arrivals
Published: · Updated:

After you finish immigration inspection and collect your bags, how do you get to your school or housing? Narita Airport is far from the centre of Tokyo, and travelling with large luggage can feel stressful the first time. This guide explains the main ways to get from the airport to your school or housing, how to send your luggage, and what to watch for if you arrive late, based on official information.
We checked the official pages listed at the bottom on 8 November 2026. Train and bus fares, travel times, first and last services, and bus destinations and stops change with timetable revisions and over time. In this guide we write only the figures we could confirm on official pages, and for everything we could not confirm we say "check the official website". Before you leave, confirm with your school and with each company's latest information.
First, ask your school
The best way to get from the airport to your school depends on where your school is and what time you arrive. Before you leave for Japan, it helps to ask your school the following.
- Will someone from the school meet you at the airport? If not, does the school recommend a route?
- The name of the station nearest your school (or your housing), and how to walk from there.
- If you will move into a dormitory or housing arranged by the school, by what time on arrival day you need to be there, and where and from whom you collect the key.
- What to do if you are likely to arrive late at night.
Write the name of the nearest station and the address in Japanese on paper and carry it, so you can show it to people if you get stuck. Flights can arrive late, so also tell your school the scheduled arrival time and your flight number.
The overall flow
- Finish immigration and customs (see Japan's Immigration Process Step by Step).
- Collect your bags. You can also send large luggage ahead by delivery.
- Take a train, bus or taxi to the station or stop nearest your school or housing.
Which terminal you arrive at
Narita Airport has Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Which terminal you arrive at depends on your airline and flight. Check your ticket or your airline's information. The nearest station and the boarding areas or stops differ by terminal.
According to Narita International Airport (NAA), the train stations are as follows.
| Terminal | Station | Walking time to the station (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 1 | Narita Airport Station (成田空港駅) | about 5 minutes |
| Terminal 2 | Airport Terminal 2 Building Station (空港第2ビル駅) | about 5 minutes |
| Terminal 3 | Airport Terminal 2 Building Station (空港第2ビル駅) | about 10 minutes |
Terminal 3 is a longer walk from the station. If you have a lot of luggage, allow extra time.
By train
JR and Keisei trains serve Narita Airport. According to NAA, the main trains are as follows.
| Train | Company | Main stops (from NAA's guidance) |
|---|---|---|
| Skyliner | Keisei | Nippori, Keisei Ueno and others |
| Access Express | Keisei | Higashi-Matsudo, Keisei Takasago, Aoto, Nippori, Keisei Ueno and others |
| Keisei Main Line | Keisei | Keisei Narita, Keisei Funabashi, Keisei Takasago, Aoto, Nippori, Keisei Ueno and others |
| Narita Express (N'EX) | JR | Narita, Chiba, Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yokohama, Ofuna and others |
| JR lines | JR | Narita, Chiba, Funabashi, Akihabara, Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and others |
Narita Express (JR)
According to the JR Group (the six JR passenger companies), the Narita Express has reserved seats only and no unreserved cars. The adult one-way fare to or from Narita Airport for an ordinary-car reserved seat (fare and limited-express charge combined), as of October 2026, is:
- Tokyo – Narita Airport: 3,140 yen
- Shinjuku – Narita Airport: 3,330 yen
- Yokohama – Narita Airport: 4,480 yen
The reserved-seat limited-express charge is the same all year (there is no off-peak or peak-season difference). Fares can be revised, so check JR East's information before you ride.
Skyliner (Keisei)
According to the Keisei page, the Skyliner has reserved seats only, and the page states "as fast as 36 minutes from Nippori Station to Airport Terminal 2 Building Station (空港第2ビル駅)". The fare depends on the type of ticket, and the figures differed between sources, so we do not give one in this guide. Check Keisei's official website for the latest fare and timetable. You can reserve in advance on the internet.
Access Express and the Keisei Main Line (Keisei)
The Keisei page says that the Access Express and the rapid limited express and limited express need "no limited-express charge". They make more stops than the Skyliner, and depending on the station you board at, can take longer. The fare and time depend on the station you board at and the time of day. Keisei revised its timetable on Saturday 13 December 2025 (weekday timetables from 15 December), so train times may have changed. Before you leave, check times and fares on Keisei's official website.
Contacts for times and fares
The NAA page lists these contacts.
- JR East Inquiry Center: 050-2016-1600 (6:00–24:00)
- Keisei Electric Railway navigation dial: 0570-081-160 (9:00–18:00)
NAA's website also has a function where you enter where you want to go from the airport and it searches train and bus routes.
By bus
NAA's guidance lists the airport limousine bus and low-cost express buses (LCB) as buses from the airport. There is also a bus ticket sales counter inside the airport. Bus destinations, fares, travel times, stops and whether you need to reserve differ by bus company and change over time. We did not find figures we could confirm, so this guide does not give any. Check NAA's guidance and the bus companies' official websites.
The bus stops differ by terminal. When you arrive, check the airport's signs and the bus ticket sales counter.
By taxi
According to NAA, there is a fixed-fare taxi (Airport Taxi) from Narita Airport to the Tokyo area, with a set fare by zone. You can use it without reserving. The pick-up points are No. 15 at Terminal 1, Nos. 28 and 31-A at Terminal 2, and a dedicated stop at Terminal 3.
The fares listed by NAA (via the Keiyo Road) are as follows.
| Zone | Main areas | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| A | Edogawa, Katsushika and Adachi wards | 23,500 yen |
| C | Chuo, Chiyoda, Taito, Bunkyo and Arakawa wards | 29,000 yen |
| D | Shinjuku, Shibuya, Meguro and Ota wards and others | 31,500 yen |
| F | Setagaya and Suginami wards, Mitaka and Musashino cities | 35,500 yen |
Expressway tolls and similar actual costs are charged separately. A surcharge for 22:00 to 5:00 is also charged separately. The fare is much higher than the train. Consider it when you arrive late at night and have no other way, for example. If your school is outside Tokyo, this table does not tell you the fare.
Sending large luggage by delivery
If you have a lot of luggage, you can send it from the airport to your school or housing by delivery service. According to NAA, there are the following delivery counters on the arrivals floors (the 1st floor of the terminals) and elsewhere (all are before security).
- Terminal 1 (North and South Wings) and Terminal 2: Yamato Transport and JAL ABC. Sagawa Express is on the 1st floor of Terminal 1 North Wing, the 4th floor of the South Wing, and the 1st floor of Terminal 2. Check the place and hours on the official page before you use it.
- Terminal 3: Yamato Transport
The 1st-floor counters are open from 6:30 until one hour after the last flight arrives (Yamato Transport: 6:30–22:30, or until one hour after the last flight arrives if that is later). If you want to collect your luggage in the 6 a.m. hour after an early-morning international flight, the page says to contact each company directly.
Same-day delivery has cut-off times and area limits. For example, Yamato Transport's same-day delivery is accepted from 6:30 to 10:30 on the 1st floors of Terminals 1 and 2 and 6:30 to 9:50 at Terminal 3, and the delivery area is limited. Sagawa and JAL ABC same-day hotel delivery is accepted until 14:00, and Sagawa's covers 10 wards in central Tokyo and some hotels in Urayasu.
Whether they deliver to a school or dormitory, whether it arrives the next day, how much it costs and what you need are not written on the NAA page. Ask each company. If you send luggage to a school or dormitory, first check with the school on which day and at what time it can be received.
If you arrive late at night or early in the morning
According to NAA, the terminal buildings have different opening hours by area.
- Terminal 1: the arrivals floor (1st floor) is open 24 hours.
- Terminal 2: the 1st floor is open 24 hours.
- Terminal 3: the 1st floor (arrivals) and 2nd floor are open 24 hours.
24-hour shops and eateries are: Terminal 1 (Lawson), Terminal 2 (7-Eleven, Yoshinoya) and Terminal 3 (Lawson, Matsuya). In the car-park building at Terminal 2 there is a capsule hotel open 24 hours; it can be full on the day, so booking ahead is recommended.
However, the page also says that late at night and early in the morning, cleaning or construction work near where you stay may be noisy. We could not confirm the last train and last bus times. If you take a late flight, decide the following before you leave for Japan.
- Can you get into your school or housing that same day (if not, where will you wait)?
- Will you make the last train or bus? If not, how will you travel (taxi, wait at the airport until morning, and so on)?
- Have you told your school, or the person meeting you, that you will arrive late?
What to carry
- Your passport and your residence card (if you received it at the airport).
- A note in Japanese with the name, address and nearest station of your school.
- The phone number of your school or your housing manager.
- A small amount of Japanese yen in cash. Whether you can use a credit card at train ticket machines or bus counters differs by company.
Things to watch out for
- Do not follow people who approach you. If someone at the airport tries to put you in a car without agreeing a fare, do not get in; go to the airport information counter or the official taxi stand (this is this guide's advice).
- Keep your luggage where you can see it, and keep your passport and wallet on your person.
- If you take the wrong train or bus, or do not know where you are heading, show a station or airport staff member your destination on a note in Japanese and ask.
